These signs were made by Louise Hudson and her wife Emily Godfrey in Edgeley, Stockport, and taken to the Black Lives Matter peaceful protest in Manchester on Saturday 6th June 2020. The death of George Floyd in the United States was a catalyst for Black Lives Matter protests and marches across the world. George Floyd was killed under police custody after a white officer held him down by pressing a knee into his neck in Minneapolis on 25th May 2020.
Stockport Museums, as part of Stockport Council, believe racism and inequality have no place in society. We are always actively seeking to represent the diversity of Stockport in our museum collection and collecting the Black Lives Matter protest placards is one way in which we can record, learn and stand against racism.
